The Art of Flying
HUNTSVILLE —
Not only super heroes are flying anymore. Kinetic Disruption, the parkour and freerunning club at SHSU, is a group of students performing moves that look similar to those in the Matrix and Spiderman. If you haven’t seen them performing or practicing their moves you are missing out, it’s amazing.
I recently got to sit down with a couple of the members during one of their practice sessions and was astonished by their mind and body control as they climbed up the clock tower and flipped, landing perfectly on their feet with competence and swiftness. The members exhibit superhero qualities with a twist, and in fact have no super powers. Member Peter Chasteen, said, “Anybody of any physical ability can get themselves to do it.”
Founder and President Jessell Boseman, started the club unofficially in the fall of 2009, after meeting other interested members at a game of capture of the flag. After a while, the club grew to 30 members and became an official club of SHSU. Boseman said, “The reason we have the club is to let people know that you can do it, nothing is impossible unless you believe it is impossible.”
Parkour and freerunning look dangerous, but Boseman explains, “Anything is dangerous, I mean you can get hurt just walking outside. If you take the time to prepare yourself and condition yourself, as well as; work out and practice these moves in a safer environment instead of just going out and trying them you will be safe.” The club works together to promote safety by using a mat and rely on each other to make sure they are prepared for the trick beforehand. They boast that so far they haven’t had any members with major injuries because of participation in the club.
Both Boseman and Chasteen explained that club offers many health advantages. Boseman said, “doing parkour is the kind of workout you want to do, it is fun. Some people are afraid to do the work, or use their body in a different way.” Chasteen said, “your muscles, your mind and your body are in complete control of all distances and everything (when doing parkour or freerunning).” All the members exhibited sculpted bodies, high energy and passion for the sport. Boseman said, “I will do this until I die and can’t move anymore, I love it that much. I can’t walk down the stairs normally anymore once you learn to fly, why would you want to walk anymore, you know?”
It is easy to become entranced watching these Sam students. If you are interested in participating or watching them practicing they are in the mall from area Monday through Thursday 4pm to 6pm.
