Jarrod Sterrett & the Hired Guns Release New Album

By: Ashley Pauley

Huntsville —     Jarrod Sterrett’s musical aspirations began when he got to Huntsville to attend Sam Houston State University, and he has been hard at work ever since. The 25-year-old musician came to Huntsville six years ago and spoke highly of his living experience.
“I kind of like it here,” he said. “Since I’ve been here there’s been a whole world of other things open up that I would’ve never thought of.”
Jarrod Sterrett & the Hired Guns just released their newest album “Ready for the Road,” and Sterrett is indeed ready for the road. “I’d like to make a living playing music,” he said. “That’s really what I’m focusing on right now.”
Sterrett wrote the lyrics to the songs on his newest album. The band worked as a team to create these unique songs that are blend of rockabilly, classic country, Texas country, blues and rock influenced songs.
“I’m not a drummer so I don’t write the drum beats and I’m not a bass player so I don’t write the bass parts,” Sterrett
The album includes the songs: “Whiskey Can’t Help,” “Going Home,” “Getting Over You” and “Drunk and Proud.” The band’s most requested song is Whiskey Can’t Help which has even been played on the radio in Madisonville.  Sterrett admits, Getting Over You is based on a true event. The song is about, “keeping your mind occupied on something fun (when you are getting over a failed relationship).”
Sterrett also has written other songs such as “They Call Him a Cowboy.” This song talks about a man that is judged by others based on his attire. Sterrett was working on a horse ranch when he wrote the song. He said, “The song is about how people snap judge others they don’t know who they are or where they’ve been or what they’re going through.”
Sterrett sings and plays the guitar, mandolin, 6-string banjo, lap steel and trumpet. His inspirations are Dwight Yoakum, George Strait, Johnny Cash and Aaron Watson. When he was asked if he had a message to his fans he said, “I prefer to think of people that come to see me play as friends I haven’t met yet.”
